Earlier this year we visited a client who had just moved into a house that they has purchased; having moved in, their attention soon focused on the redesign of their sloped garden, and the creation of a place to enjoy with family and friends. However the garden presented a number of challenges.
Garden Challenges
- a high brick wall immediately outside the patio doors, which wrapped around the house
- a side area of garden with a disused hot tub and seating arbour tucked into a dark corner
- tight set of steps leading up to the main garden area
- a steep grass embankment area to the rear of the garden which had been partially neglected
Client Requirements
In the initial consultation, we discussed what the client wanted from their outdoor space and shared ideas with them on how to create their dream garden.
The clients requirements included:
- provide better access to the garden from the French doors
- improve light entering the house from the rear
- improve access into the garden from the narrow path around the house
- provide ideas of how to redesign the grass bank to the rear of the garden
- improve access to the very top of the garden and greenhouse
- design the side of the garden to be a more inviting place
The garden design
After the consultation a full site survey was undertaken, taking into account all aspects of the garden, and a scaled design was created which included:
- Redesign of the wall immediately outside the French doors to
- a. Improve light into the house
- b. Provide better access to the main garden area
- c. Create additional planting areas to soften the area
- Removing and redesigning of the grass bank at rear of the garden to create new terraced areas. These areas would incorporate additional planting beds, a seating area for a garden bench and a series of steps to gain access to the greenhouse and upper garden
- Creation of a vegetable garden to include raised beds, an area for fruit trees and bushes and wildflower planting
- Creation of a small courtyard to the side of the house to accommodate a small bistro table for “beverage” breaks, and new access to the main garden area
- Repurpose the existing gazebo into main garden
- The general theme of the planting was colourful and cottage style, taking into consideration the garden aspect and soil conditions
Watch out for our next update showing the construction of the garden and the transformation.
