Before starting to work out a planting plan it is important to understand the varying conditions within your garden, for example:
- are there areas of the garden which are in full sun or shade, how much shade is there?
- what is the acidity of your soil? for example is the soil acidic, alkaline or neutral, soil test kits are available from most gardens but remember to test the various planting areas in your garden
- what is the condition of your soil, is it free draining, or clay?
Next you need to decide that kind of look you would like planting and the kind of atmosphere would you like to create (both of these maybe influenced by your answers to the questions detailed above). Finally once you have gathered all of this information you are ready to create a planting plan for your garden. Care must be taken to select the appropriate plants for the conditions identified earlier.
