A minimalist garden design is all about constraint and can be used to describe either a small contemporary design or larger areas with a limited planting scheme and geometry at its core.
Because minimalist is all about constraint it is extremely important when creating the garden design to first consider the materials to be used for the boundaries as this can set the tone for the remainder of the garden.
The design is all about space and how it is used, and involves a restricted palette of hard landscaping materials, colour and plants, combined with bold design. The need for plants in this style of garden can be minimal yet still remain key to the design. The planting should be restricted to no more than three species and repeated if necessary within the scheme.
